The Benefit of Short Term Memory Loss

Russian Neuropsychologist Alexander Luria studied an individual named Solomon Shereshevsky.

Let’s call him “S.”

“S” was known for his ability to memorize long sequences of numbers and words.

He would get retested 15 years later.

“S” was able to recall every answer perfectly,

Reciting everything forwards and backwards.

This was called "Eidetic Memory (AKA photographic).

After 30 years, Luria concluded that there were no limits to our brain’s depth.

Is this the type of skill we desire?

When it came to “S”,

His gift caused him to remember every pain, suffering, and injustice in his lifetime.

Luria wrote that “S” achieved little benefit from his perfect memory.

“S” died unfulfilled and unhappy, even with such an incredible talent.

Imagine the impact and difference he could’ve made.

The biggest question we must ask ourselves:

"What do we do with our past?"
